2012 College Football Contest

I think there has been some confusion with regards the home page of the 2012 College Football Contest.

Under the 'Side Pools' link in the list on the left, you will see a link for the 2012 College Football Handicapping Contest.

http://cungsmajorspool.com/2012_handicapping.html

The 'Rules' link on the left applies to the golf Majors Pool, not the football contest.

Please use the link above for football contest related inquiries.

There are two more weeks to register for the football pool.  We currently have 31 players signed up.  We'd like to get a few more so pass the info along to friends.

Thanks.

PGA/Final Results

I was hoping for a more dramatic Sunday to close out our season but Mr. McIlroy wanted no part of that.  What a dominant final performance.  The last player to win the PGA Championship by 7 or more shots was Nicklaus in 1980.  Rory now holds the record at 8.  Well done Rory.

Thirty-one players, including 3 in the top 10, had Rory and pocketed a cool $1.445illion this weekend.  Cha ching.

Brent Powdrill is this week's winner with earnings of $2,045,453 (Rory, Bradley, Tiger, Oosthuizen).  Very good week for Brent.  $200 bucks coming your way.

And with that, the moment you all have been waiting for.

Congratulations to the following players for cashing in the 2012 Majors Pool (Final position, name, prior rank):
1st Place -  Eric Kelley $2,200 (3rd)
2nd Place - Brent Powdrill $1,600 (6th)
3rd Place - Lindsay Boston $1,100 (5th)
4th Place - Stephen Shapiro $700 (2nd)
5th Place - Edward Johnson $550 (1st)
6th Place - Chris Hampy $400 (4th)
7th Place - Trey Williamson $300 (7th)
8th Place - Thomas Zentner $250 (19th)
9th Place - Michael Ramirez $200 (23rd)
Two last place exemptions into 2013 pool - Lee Simmons and Mike Sirois

Please reply with your mailing address so I can send you a check for your winnings.

Double-check your results to make sure they are accurate.  Earnings for the PGA Championship can be found here:

I hope everyone enjoyed the season.  If you have any suggestions or feedback, feel free to email me.  I'm always looking for ways to improve the pool for future years.

Also, don't forget to sign up for the 2012 College Football contest:

We'll do it again in 2013.

Regards,
Steve Cung

PGA Round 2 Results

Wow, tough day for these guys as the wind picked up in a major way and made for a very different day than Thursday.  The projected cut was at +2 at one point but ended up at +6.

Yet again, Tiger is in the hunt at another major.  The good thing is that almost everyone has used him this year so only 5 players selected him for this event.

Our top 5 in the pool is struggling.  Out of the 20 golfers selected by the top 5, only 3 are under par.  Our current leader, Edward Johnson, is a combined +17 with 3 players making the cut. His best score is with Ooosthuizen at +5.  Ouch.

Brent Powdrill, round 1 leader and currently in 6th, is still in the hunt with Tiger and Rory.  He's the only player in the top 10 with two golfers under par heading into the weekend.

Should be a fun moving day.  Links will be updated at the conclusion of today's round.

Happy Saturday!

PGA Round 1 Results

Benign conditions leads to decent scoring today but that could change tomorrow.

Carl Pettersson is your leader after 18.  Only Aaron Shields (ranked 82) had Pettersson.  That should keep you interested this week Aaron.

Brent Powdrill is your overall scoring leader in the clubhouse at an aggregate of 14 under.
- Rory McIlroy -5
- Keegan Bradley -4
- Tiger Woods -3
- Louis Oosthuizen -2

Not only does Brent have all 4 golfers in the red numbers, he's currently ranked 6th overall in the pool.  If these guys hold on to finish strong, the top 5 could be in trouble.  Great start buddy.

Notables that had a rough first round:
- T66 Bubba Watson +1 Selected 45 times
- T92 Jason Dufner +2 Selected 41 times
- T92 Steve Stricker +2 Selected 21 times
- T143 Webb Simpson +7 Selected 13 times

But as we all know, round 1 results mean almost nothing, especially this year.  We still have 54 holes to  play so there's a long way to go.

Both leaderboards have been updated as well as the PGA links.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

Restated British Results

It was brought to my attention that I slightly over-stated everyone's earnings.

All earnings totals for the British have been corrected and had lite affect to the overall rankings.  Edward Johnson was still our weekly winner.

British Open Results

Wow, epic choke.  Adam Van de Velde had a 4 shot lead with 4 to play and ended up playing the last 4 holes four over.  What a clutch put by Ernie to essentially win the championship.  The last 45 minutes of this tournament proves that sports is the best reality TV period.  Gotta feel for Scott but I think pretty boy will survive.

I was expecting to give out the $1.4 million only to 12 Scott backers, including myself.  But instead, 28 people are $1.4M richer for picking the Big Easy.  3 of those 28 are currently ranked in the top 10.  Sheesh.

The winner this week was Mr. Edward Johnson with total earnings of $1,965,145 (Els, Woods, Harrington). Please contact me with your mailing address so I can send you your $200 check.  Congrats.

Edward was in 4th place heading into this tournament and now holds the overall lead over Stephen Shapiro who was able to stay in 2nd.  Although I envy your position at the top, I'm glad I don't have the pressure to hold the top spot for our grand prize of $2,200.

At the bottom of the leaderboard, Chesney Coker and Lee Simmons currently are in the running for the two exemption spots for next year.

Please double-check your earnings totals to make sure they are correct:

The PGA Championship is our final event and will begin August 9th.  For those in the running for the top 9 spots, I would suggest you do your homework and start thinking about your players.

Contact me if you see any discrepancies with the final results.

The Open - Round 2 Results

Brandt Snedeker?  Really?  The guy who has never made a cut at The Open?  30-1 odds for him to win pre-tournament?  Luckily, no one in the pool selected him but the likelihood of him holding the lead through Sunday with Scott and Tiger breathing down his neck is slim.

The player popularity leaderboard, scoring leaderboard and both British Opn links ave been updated with results from round 2.  On the scoring leaderboard, I restated the Prior Rank column to only include golfers that will be teeing it up tomorrow.

As you can see from the Player Popularity Leaderboard, Adam Scott is at the top of the pool since no one had Snedeker.  Only 12 people, including yours truly, had Scott and only 6 of the remaining 13 people have Tiger.

At the top of the Scoring Leaderboard is Thomas Zenter (ranked 41) at -19 total with 3 players making it to the weekend:
Scott -9
Woods -6
McDowell -4

Sitting pretty for the weekend.

Here's how the top 10 players are doing heading into the weekend (only one player in the top 10 had Scott):

The Open - Round 1 Results posted

Results for round 1 have been updated on the Player Popularity Leaderboard, Scoring Leaderboard and British Open links.

The scoring leaderboard, was calculated differently than prior tournaments.  I excluded the scores of any golfers not projected to make the cut (top 70 and ties) when tallying scores for each participant.  This way, If you had Adam Scott at -6 but some hack at +6, it would not show you at even par.

Since we're only concerned about earnings, we only care about the players staying through the weekend.

I will post results for round 2 tomorrow at the conclusion of the round.

Good luck tomorrow.
